Build a Pet Kit
With Essential Supplies

Cats, dogs, birds, lizards, rabbits, and pigmy goats are just a few of the animals we love to have as pets. We go to great lengths to make sure they have food, water, vaccinations and shelter every day. Consider that during a disaster, the pets we love will rely on us more than ever.
Before a Disaster, consider how you will care for your pet.
Emergency Pet Shelters
It’s important to know that most emergency shelter facilities will not allow pets, so an alternate plan for their shelter is a must!
- Nearby kennels & animal shelters – have at least 3 names and numbers to place in your emergency kit. Note that most kennels will require a vaccination record in order to accept your pet.
- Nearby hotels or motels that may accept pets – again include their names and numbers is your kit
- Friends and family – Consider who might be able to temporarily care for your pet if you must leave home?
- If you can, take your pet with you. Have a sturdy pet carrier available.
If you Have To Leave Your Pet
If you absolutely need to leave your pet:
- Leave pets in a secure location inside your home or garage with plenty of food and water. Consider purchasing an automatic water and food dispenser.
- Leave a collar with the pet tag and license securely on your pet.
- Leave a note on your door to advise search and rescue teams that a pet is inside. Provide the name of the pet and the place and phone number you can be reached.
- Plan to check on your pet daily or ask a neighbor to do so.
